<image:caption>Key protagonist, David has various gifts and talents but a strong fashion sense isn't one of them. His trademarks are a battered blue fedora and overcoat. <image:title>People - Juan & Alicia Hernandez</image:title>
<image:caption>"Come back to Edinburgh - we'll look after you". When everything falls apart for David Hidalgo in Spain, his friends Juan and Alicia come to the rescue and invite him back to his childhood home where they now run La Hacienda Spanish restaurant. As if the paella and rabo de toro weren't enough, they provide the love and care he needs when all hope seems to have gone. Juan is his right hand man in church, in life and in matters of faith. When crucial events seem to turn on a matter of luck Juan has a ready reply. "No such thing", he says.</image:caption>

<image:title>People - Dr. Gillian Lockhart</image:title>
<image:caption>Gillian Lockhart is a Scots Language specialist working in the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences College of Edinburgh University. She has already survived a difficult childhood and a failed marriage and is hoping to survive her relationship with David Hidalgo despite some very sticky situations. Coming from a totally different background to David she's the one who asks the awkward questions that make him re-examine his most basic beliefs and practices. She loves Dylan, Mozart and her silver Mazda MX5.</image:caption>

<image:title>People - Mrs Irene MacInnes</image:title>
<image:caption>Nowadays we call it the Spirit of the Blitz and think it's a thing of the past. Mrs MacInnes proves that cleanliness, punctualiity, reliability and short shrift to shoddy tradesmen still survive and thrive. With a Jenner's handbag, a well thumbed Bible and a good cup of tea, Mrs MacInnes is the best ally a discouraged pastor could have.</image:caption>

<image:title>People - Alison MacInnes</image:title>
<image:caption>Alison never thought of herself as a snob but leaving her nice middle class, middle income bungalow for a hard to let council house in Pilton was a bitter blow. Gradually she learns respect and even admiration for many of her neighbours. Nevertheless bringing up a teenager as a lone parent isn't easy even when you don't have to content with drugs, gangsters and body parts in the garden.</image:caption>

<image:title>People - Jen MacInnes</image:title>
<image:caption>Life has not been very fair to Jennifer MacInnes. When her parents seperated it didn't only mean losing family stability but also losing her home, school, friends and everything else of importance to a teenage girl. Maybe it's not so surprising then that drugs gangs and their associated glam seemed so attractive. But it can be a dangerous path to follow. Putting herself in harm's way starts the alarm bells ringing for everyone else - including her Granny, Irene MacInnes, and eventually even David Hidalgo... </image:caption>

<image:caption>Lentil soup is a wonderful thing. Especially in the cold east coast blast that Edinburgh is so often subject to. <image:title>Places - Chapter 2: La Movida Madrileña</image:title>
<image:caption>Madrid is a wonderful vibrant city with a rich history and culture. David Hidalgo lived here during much of his adult life. La movida (the movement) was a time of new openness and experimentation after the death of Franco. A bit like the 60s in London but 20 years later. This is a view along Gran Via one of the city's major arteries.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Juan and Alicia's restaurant, Hacienda, is one of a growing number of Spanish bars and restaurants in Edinburgh. Not only is eating tapas a bit of a fashion trend for the British but, due to the continuing economic crisis in Spain, Edinburgh is full of Spanish young people who want to eat their own favourite dishes and drink Spanish beer and wine. Hacienda has a variety of meanings but can mean a farm. ranch or country estate. Hacienda restaurant is located in S. Clerk Street in the Southside area.</image:caption>

<image:title>Places - Chapter 7: Morningside</image:title>
<image:caption>Morningside is a district on the south east of Edinburgh south of Bruntsfield and south west of Marchmont. More importantly for many Edinburghers, it stands for slightly down at heel gentility and and posh pretensions. Of course that's probably just a villainous stereotype and doesn't actually apply to any modern day Morningsiders!</image:caption>

<image:title>Places - Chapter 9: West Pilton</image:title>
<image:caption>West Pilton has changed a lot in the last thirty years but it probably still has to be said that it's not an aspirational area to live in. Home ownership has increased, a lot of substandard local authority housing has been demolished and amenities have improved however Wikipedia still comments "Pilton consists of two, mostly council, housing schemes -West Pilton and East Pilton. These schemes are regarded as two of the most deprived schemes in Edinburgh and suffer from high crime rates and anti-social behaviour especially young joyriders stealing powerful motorbikes and cars, driving them recklessly round the scheme."</image:caption>

<image:title>Places - Chapter 10: Southside</image:title>
<image:caption>Edinburgh's Southside, to the south of the Royal Mile, is a vibrant multicultural area including much of Edinburgh University, historical buildings like Surgeon's Hall and the National Museum of Scotland and a host of independent shops, restaurants and pubs. Former residents apparently include JK Rowling and Nirvana!</image:caption>

<image:title>Places - Chapter 12: Holyrood Park</image:title>
<image:caption>Edinburgh is a city with a generous supply of parkland and principal among its green spaces is Holyrood Park. Unlike most city parks, Holyrood actually feels like you're out in the country with the volcanic plug known as Arthur's Seat , the spectacular Salisbury Crags and various lochs, walks, wildlife and lots of fresh air. <image:caption>Pennywell Gardens is one of the major routes into Muirhouse, a north Edinburgh housing estate just next to West Pilton. Wikipedia comments "the area is generally regarded as one of the most deprived areas of Edinburgh, with anti-social behaviour and drug use major problems. However, in recent years major redevelopment of the area has started. Martello Court, which was once seen as the centre of Muirhouse's social problems has been refurbished and now affords a better reputation."</image:caption>

<image:caption>Cobbled streets, tenements with turrets and crow-stepped gable ends, wine shops, bistros and lots of urban professionals - that's Marchmont. <image:title>Places - Chapter 17: Edinburgh</image:title>
<image:caption>Edinburgh - what can we say? It's undoubtedly one of the great world cities with a particularly iconic skyline, more historical buildings than you can waggle your kilt at and a long and distinguished pedigree in arts, literature, philosophy and science. David Hidalgo isn't sure which he loves more - Edinburgh or Madrid - but right now Edinburgh is home and where he wants to be.</image:caption>

<image:title>Places - Chapter 18: Madrid</image:title>
<image:caption>The capital of Spain is a city of over three million inhabitants or double that in the wider Madrid region. The first references to the city date from the time of the Moorish occupation of Spain although the site seems to have been occupied since prehistoric times. Nowadays it is an exiciting, multicultural city with a mix of historic buildings and modern infrastructure. It's also the city of Hemingway, Ronaldo and Velázquez ... and David Hidalgo.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Torrejón (for short) is a working class, immigrant and commuter town to the east of Madrid on the route from the capital towards Alcalá de Henares and onwards to Gaudalajara. Its main claim to fame has been the NATO military airbase which led to the route from Torrejón to Madrid being the first motorway in Spain. Also because of the American influence it has one of the largest evangelical concentrations in Spain.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The identity of Warehouse 66 is party based on Iglesia Betel, the largest evengelical church in Madrid and maybe in Spain. <image:title>Places - Chapter 21: Southside and Muirhouse</image:title>
<image:caption>Like any modern capital, Edinburgh is a city of contrasts: from the biggest arts festival in the world to drugs and poverty; from the genteel residents of Morningside to the characters of Trainspotting; from financial institutions managing billions to beggars on Princes Street. <image:title>Places - Chapter 22: Policía Nacional</image:title>
<image:caption>Spain has a rather complicated policing structure with a national police force for law and order issues affecting the country as a whole or towns with more than 20,000 people, local police for smaller pueblos and the Civil Guard for rural areas and intercity transport routes.</image:caption>

<image:title>Places - Chapter 23: Parador de Toledo</image:title>
<image:caption>Far from the crowded beaches of the south and the bullfights of Madrid, Spain has a wonderful network of tourist hotels called Paradors - literally simply "stopping places". What singles the paradors out is not only generally high quality but that many are located in fantastic historical buildings such as monasteries, convents and country houses.</image:caption>

<image:title>Places - Chapter 26: Valdepeñas</image:title>
<image:caption>Valdepeñas in south central Spain is not renowned for the quality of its wines, like the Rioja region, but is said to be the largest contiguous wine growing region in the world. <image:title>Places - Chapter 27: Calatrava la Nueva</image:title>
<image:caption>The Almagro region in the south of Spain is full of towns, villages and features with the Calatrava name. Ironically the medieval castle and convent is Calatrava "la nueva" - meaning "the new". Well, it must have been new some time... <image:title>Places - Chapter 29: Scotland</image:title>
<image:caption>Scotland has been subject to many clichés throughout its history - many still made use of in marketing and tourist hype. The Scotland David returns to after things fall apart in Spain is - for him - a place to welcome, acceptance, purposeful activity, recovery and of course some challenges. Ultimately perhaps more worthwhile than caber tossing and haggis.</image:caption>
